Changes to Peasholm Surgery, Scarborough

23rd September 2022 - 7:54 AM

The Integrated Care Board (formerly North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group) have explored the findings of a recent consultation and made the decision to support the winding down of the Peasholm Surgery site in Scarborough, which will be handed back to its landlord in March 2023.

Dr Alastair Crosswaite, Haxby Group GP Partner, said:

“General Practice is evolving and introducing us to new ways of working, new technology and better ways to deliver services to the growing numbers of patients who need care.

We have made many improvements in Scarborough in recent years and these changes are showing results for our patients. Our aim is to continue to ensure the Care Quality Commission also recognises these improvements by continuing to rate us a safe, high-quality service with modern facilities  available for our patients, visitors, and staff.

To meet the required standards, all our premises must be fit for purpose, safe and comply with infection control standards. Many of our patients will notice the fantastic improvements made to our Lawrence House surgery which now has 38 clinical rooms for face-to-face appointments, and renovated reception and waiting areas. We have also moved into additional office space at York House where many of our admin staff are now located.

Earlier this year we asked 5,000 of our patients for their views on our Peasholm surgery site which we rent. We wanted to hear, based on their most recent visit, how they rated the surgery building in terms of ease of access, location, and suitability. The results of this survey have helped the practice and the Integrated Care Board (ICB) to review facility options for the practice and where is best for us to deliver face-to-face care for our patients.

Many patients agreed that the building was not the safest due to the steepness of the stairs, that there is a lack of accessible rooms, that the clinical rooms are too small, waiting areas were not big enough. We do appreciate that there were also many positive comments from patients who have attended Peasholm for a long period of time and have a connection with the practice.

The Integrated Care Board (formerly North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group) have explored these findings and made the decision to support the winding down of the Peasholm site which will be handed back to its landlord in March 2023.

Patients will have noticed a gradual reduction in services provided from Peasholm over the last year with a limited number of face-to-face appointments being made available and at times a regular closure of the site to maximise appointment availability from Lawrence House.

Haxby Group Scarborough patients do not need to do anything and will still be registered with the practice. Patients who normally use the Tennyson Avenue site can still be seen by their usual clinician at Lawrence House instead which is 1 mile away. Patients who normally drop their prescriptions into Peasholm Surgery can discuss with their local pharmacy to order their prescription for those who cannot use online services, and for those who order over the phone now, can continue to do so.

During October through to December Haxby Group patients can book appointments at Lawrence House for their flu and COVID injections as the newly refurbished surgery means patients don’t have to travel to other venues. Invites will be sent to patients or you can contact 119 or visit the national booking system on www.nhs.uk/book-a-coronavirus-vaccination/

Over the next few months there will be further changes to opening hours and transfer of appointments from Peasholm Surgery to Lawrence House Surgery.”
