Vasectomy is a safe, effective, long-term option for contraception

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure to cut or seal the tubes that carry sperm, to prevent pregnancy permanently. We perform vasectomies with a highly trained team in our minor surgical suite at Gale Farm surgery in York. This service is available to patients registered with GPs in the Vale of York, or Scarborough and Ryedale. You can access it via routine referral from your usual GP.

If you are thinking about having a vasectomy, please bear in mind:

  • You should consider it a non-reversible procedure, so you must be sure that it is right for you. A vasectomy can be reversed, but this is not available through the NHS, and the reversal procedure has only a 30 per cent success rate.
  • It will not be effective immediately. You will need to provide a semen sample after 12 weeks to confirm that the vasectomy was successful. You can only rely on the procedure to prevent pregnancy once you receive confirmation from us that your sample does not show any sperm. Some patients will need to provide more than one sample.

Once your referral for a vasectomy has been accepted, we will send you an information pack and an appointment letter. You can also find the information pack below. Please read this carefully before coming in for your procedure to make sure you have taken all the necessary steps.

For more information about vasectomies, please see the information leaflet, or visit the NHS website.
